  3. prolific output included work on complex
  4. functions, determinants, and probability, and
  5. on the convergence of infinite series. In
  6. calculus, he refined the concepts of the
  7. limit and the definite integral. In 1843 he
  8. published a defence of academic freedom of
  9. thought that was instrumental in the
  10. abolition of the oath of allegiance soon
  11. after the fall of Louis Philippe in 1848.
